The 2015 HKDSE are published below for the guidance of parents on the school performance. The Tak Sun results are shown together with the average results of all Hong Kong boys in the 2014 HKDSE (the data for the 2015 HKDSE is not yet available.) Please note that we have collapsed Level 5** 5* and 5 – which are all excellent results - into one column for convenience. Where Tak Sun results are better than the Hong Kong boys’ average, they are marked in gray.

School Musical Achievements 2014-15

The musical life of the school was very active this year. The choirs, wind band and string orchestra performed in school and in competitions such as the school Summer Serenade and the Leisure and Cultural Services Competition "Bravo Music! Bravo Life!" Students also performed well in the Hong Kong School 67th Music Competition. Congratulations to students and thanks to our musical directors Mr. Tony Cheng and Mr. Bosco Chu.

Tak Sun Rugby Team win Invitation Cup

The B-Grade Rugby team won the invitation tournament held at Kings Park on 31st May beating Chan Shu Kui Memorial School 5 – 1 in the final match to claim 1st place. Rugby is a new sport in our school since summer 2014 so congratulations to the team leaders Ken Hui, Kieran Jones and Khateeb Hussein and teacher advisors Mr. Alan Cheng and Mr. Jackie Chan.

Vincent Lam in the 5th Hong Kong Games

Our boy from 2P LAM Ho Hin Vincent has been selected as a Tsuen Wan Swimming District Team and participated in the 5th Hong Kong Games. This was a good opportunity to represent Tsuen Wan District Team and compete against some mature swimmers in Hong Kong. He ranked at the 10th in 200m Butterfly. He has been interviewed by a reporter after the competition and recognized by SzeTo Shui Ki (Ex-Hong Kong Team Swimmer) in that interview. Congratulations to Vincent!

AWE Programme 2015

The Activity Week Experience (AWE) Programme is a core part of the school curriculum for all Form 1 to Form 5 students in the realm of experiential learning. This year, it was held from 9th to 13th February 2015 with 24 programmes over 15 cities in 8 different countries including China, Brunei, Cambodia, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. Through these unique programmes under the super ision of 50 teachers, around 750 students can widen their horizons all over the world and extend their learning outside their classrooms. Prague Handball Cup 2015

5M Lam Long Hin, Ken joined the Hong Kong Team for the Prague Handball Cup 2015, Czech Republic. This was a unique opportunity to travel overseas in representing Hong Kong and competing against the best handball teams in the world. Hong Kong managed to reach the Quarter Finals and finished as the top eight teams in B-Final, they beat Italy, Czech and draw with Germany. Congratulations to Ken!

Gary Tsang Fencing Champion in S. California

TSANG Lok Hin Gary (a 3J old boy) has been studying in California since January 2015. Before leaving Hong Kong, he was HKSSF All N.T. B-Grade Fencing Champion (epee). He continues to compete in USA and this week he won the Southern California Summer National Qualifier and will join the USA National Fencing Tournament later this year. Congratulations to Gary from classmates and teachers of his Alma Mater.

Introducing the USA exchange students

The Heights School, a school for boys similar in educational goals and approach to Tak Sun, located near Washington D.C. will send a group of 10 students and teacher Mr. Tom Royals for a 3-week visit on 22nd February. They will live with families of our school and attend lessons in Form 4 and Form 5. They hope to learn a lot about Hong Kong and China. The 8th Law Moot Court (2014-2015), organized by the Society of Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention, Hong Kong and supported the Hong Kong Academy of Law and MaMa Charitable Foundation, was held with 36 participating schools, including Tak Sun Secondary School. The School Rugby Team was started by 4W HUI Ka Ho, Ken, 4T JONES Kieran Robert and HUSSAIN Khateeb Rasheed in 2014. The B-Grade Rugby Team joined the HKSSF Inter-School Rugby 7s Competition (All New Territories) for the first time and came the 7th overall. Singapore Handball Open Tournament 2014

Three Tak Sun boys represented Hong Kong Handball Team and participated in Singapore Handball Open Tournament and got the 3rd Runner-Up. They are 5J LAM Ho Pong, 5J CHAN Tsz Wang and 5M LAM Long Hin. In the tournament, there were 7 teams including Japan, Uzbekistan, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, CUHK-Hong Kong and Rathlon. Congratulations!

School Choir Performance at Festival Walk

The A-Grade Football Team defeated Sha Tin Methodist College by a penalty kick of 3:2 after a tie of 0:0 in the 3rd place play-off. As a result, Tak Sun came to 2nd Runner-Up in the Sha Tin and Sai Kung area HKSSF 2014-15 Football Championship. 4J CHAN Christopher Chi Lai got came the FIRST in the HKSSF Inter-School Cross Country Competition out of more than 220 B Grade runners! Besides, 6T LEE Ka Ho got the 8th place in A Grade, 4P NG Ho Yin got the 8th place in B-Grade and 2W CHAN Long Sang got the 10th place in C Grade out of 200 runners in each grade.

With such good individual results, our B Grade Cross-country came to the 2nd runner-up in the overall results. Our C Grade got the 3rd runner-up and A Grade got the 6th runner-up also! Well done, boys!

Our Football Team just finished a friendly match with Wah Yan College, Kowloon at their Football Pitch in the afternoon of 28th October 2014. Apart from building good friendship with other schools, our team did play well in the match and we won by 2:0. It definitely was a good practice before our coming up quarter-final match. National Taiwan University director of admissions visit

National Taiwan University is the premier university in Taiwan ranked better than several universities in Hong Kong. It also offers subjects which are not usually available in Hong Kong such as Veterinary Science or Marine Biology. The director of admissions. Mr. Hung Tai-xiong together with Professor Kuo Hung-chi visited TSSS and gave a presentation on applying to NTU. The seminar was attended by students from Forms 5-6 who enjoyed the presentation very much and were given another option in their choices for university studies.

Visitors from the University of Gothenburg - Sweden

Three student teachers (Ida Lundgren, Emelie Strombom and Stina Kask) at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden visited our school today to compare the Swedish school system to other countries and focus the study on the global PISA survey. They interviewed our teachers and have class observation of two Mathematics classes. The main purpose with their study is to learn more about our approaches to knowledge and educational work and find out more about how the teachers are working.

Form 5 Social Service in the local community
Social Service is part of the new senior school curriculum. So each year students must take part in voluntary work to serve others. Among other activities, the school, together with the BGCA invited neighborhood associations for the elderly, the disabled and young children to join a half day event: Circle Painting. From this activity, our boys were able to make contact with different groups of people and organizations in the Ma On Shan community and share their youthful enthusiasm and happiness through artistic drawing. The event was filmed by our Form 5 Film and Video Studies class and with stakeholder consent, we are happy to share the joy of that day.

Hong Kong Youth Aged Group Handball Competition 2014

Our B Grade Handball Team had participated in the Hong Kong Youth Aged Group Handball Competition 2014 and won the 1st Runner Up in Hong Kong. We have a final match vs. Ying Wah College with a score of 16:22. Thanks for their hardworking in training during summer and got such meaningful experience that widen their horizon for the sportsmanship and attitude in their life.

Jeffrey Choi participated in FISAC-IRSF World Rope Skipping Championship

The FISAC-IRSF World Rope Skipping Championship 2014 was held in Hong Kong from 26th July to 5th August this year. CHOI Sung Lap, Jeffrey of 2W represented Hong Kong China to participate in the event. He finally received 1st runner-up in Male Team Double Dutch Single Freestyle, Male Team Double Dutch Pair Freestyle and Male Team Overall. Jeffrey is one of the winners of our Sportsman and Musician Scholarship. Congratulations to Jeffrey!

Student representatives, P.E. teachers, Mr. Lau and Mr. Chan and the Principal attended the HKSSF 2013-14 prize-giving at the Jockey Club Ti-I College last Friday afternoon. This year TSSS has risen one place to 2nd runner-up out of 58 secondary schools as it has achieved 240 points. Our opponents have temporarily been assigned 3 extra points until they play their last match after final exams. Congratulations to all P.E. teachers, coaches, trainers and students on their excellent performance.

Northridge School, Mexico is a brother school of Tak Sun. A group of 50 students and teachers from the Northridge School will visit Hong Kong and China from 13th to 23rd May. They came to Tak Sun on 16th May 2014 (Friday) to join our annual musical concert, Tak Sun Summer Serenade, with the Tak Sun Wind Band and OSOSA Music students. The exciting event has enhanced the musical experience of our boys and deepened their friendship with their overseas partners. The Mexican Consulate also attended the event and gave them support.

HKSSF B Grade Handball Champion

Our B Grade Handball Team won the HKSSF Handball Competition Champion beating Lam Tai Fai College 20:15 in the final. They learnt a great lesson from their loss in 2013 and re-built their team spirit to win this year.

6M Matthew Lau and 3P Jethro Lam in Taiwan with Hong Kong U16 Squad

Matthew Lau 6m and Jethro Lam 3P were selected for the Hong Kong Regional Squad (U16) and trained in Taiwan during the Lunar Year holiday. This was a great opportunity to train overseas representing Hong Kong and compete against one of the best handball teams in Taiwan.

Three F4 students join Hong Kong Team in Czech Republic

Brian Lam 4J, Ken Lam and Alex Chan 4M joined the Hong Kong Junior Squad (U16) for the Prague Handball Remix Cup in Czech Republic. This was a special opportunity to represent Hong Kong overseas and compete against the best handball teams in the world. A great experience for Alex, Brian and Ken.

International Handball Federation Trophy Tournament

Alumnus Kelvin Cheung, now a 1st year student at Poly U was a top scorer in the Hong Kong U20's Team who were Champions in the International Handball Tournament held in Mongolia. The Hong Kong Team beat Taiwan, Vietnam, Mongolia and Macau. Congratulations to Kelvin and his team-mates. Hong Kong will now represent Asia in the World Handball Trophy Tournament.

International Boys Schools Seminar on Chinese

On 27th March the Principal and Mr John Yiu, (Chinese Subject Panel Chair) organized a seminar on teaching Chinese to Hong Kong boys. Brother Steve Hogan kindly offered La Salle College as the venue. The main speaker was Mr. Lai Yiu Ting who is Senior School Development Officer of the Language Support Section of EDB and Vice-Chair of HKDSE Chinese Language (Speaking). Subject Panel Chairs from our partners LSC, St. Joseph’s College, St Paul’s College, Wah Yan College (HK) Wah Yan College (KLN) also shared their experience. Mr. Lai. At the end, Dr. John Kennard of St Paul’s College and Vice-President of IBSC thanked participants. After the seminar some of the schools agreed to set up a learning circle to meet regularly with Mr. Lai.

Tak Sun came the 2nd in the HKSSF Cross Country

Our B Grade Cross-country came to the 2nd in the HKSSF Inter-School Cross Country Competition! 3W CHAN Christopher Chi Lai came also the second in the individual award out of more than 200 runners! Some of them performed very well individually, such as 4M LAU Sze Tsun got the 9th place. Besides, our A Grade and C Grade also got the 5th and 4th runner-up also. 5T LEE Ka Ho got the 9th place, out of 200 runners in A Grade and 2P CHOI King Shing got the 12th place, out of more than 200 runners in C Grade. Well done, boys!

On 28 October 2013, CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School sent a group of sixty students led by their Vice-Principal, Ms. Rebecca Yip, and an English teacher, Ms. Tracy Chan, to experience the English learning environment at Tak Sun. They were given a tour of the School and listened to a presentation by the English Subject Stream Master, Mr. Tony Lau. They also visited the Language Studio, the School Gymnasium, and the School Library. It was a precious opportunity for our student representatives to interact with their counterparts from our neighbourhood school.

Lau’s brother (5J LAU Tsz Wing, Vincent and 3T LAU Tsz Hong, Victor) and 1W CHAN Yee Lok represented China Hong Kong to participate the 7th Asia Youth Wushu Championships at the Philippines last August. They performed very well in the competition. Vincent got 3 Silver medals in Nangun, Nandao and Duilian (????????) and a Bronze medal in Group exhibition. Victor got the a Silver medal in Daoshu (??) and a Bronze medal in Group exhibition. Yee Lok got a Gold medal in Qiangshu (??)! Their performances are highly recognized by the Hong Kong SAR Government. Well done, boys!

2nd Asian Youth Game’s Handball Championship

Last summer, our boys WONG Sze Ho Stanley of 6M, LAU Cheuk Yin Matthew of 6M and LAM Ho Pong Brian of 4J has been selected in 2nd Asian Youth Game’s Handball Championship in Nanjing as a member of the China Hong Kong Youth Squad. This is the biggest competition for Hong Kong Youth Squad and they has been selected by Olympic Council of Asia to participate in the Championships. There are a total of 16 teams such as Korea, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Chinese Taipei, China, etc. The China Hong Kong Team got 14th finally! Congratulations!

38th Hong Kong Volleyball Youth Cup

In July, our C grade volleyball team got the 3rd runner-up in the 38th Hong Kong Volleyball Youth Cup Junior Section. There are 16 teams from different schools and most of them are first 3 places in their district’s inter-school competitions.

We got 3 wins in qualifying round and entered into quarter-final.
2:0 (Tang King Po School - 3rd in Kowloon Division 2)
2:0 (Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Secondary School - 2nd in Kowloon Division 1)
2:0 (St. Stephen College - 1st in Hong Kong Division 2)

We then got 2nd in the Quarter-final and entered into semi-final

This is the first time that TSSS joined in a Hong Kong open volleyball competition and hence they are supposed to earn experiences in the qualifying rounds only. However, they performed extremely well in every match and hence they got good results! Congratulations!

HKDSE 2013 Results

The results of the second year of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education demonstrated a sufficient improvement in school life. The most outstanding student this year is LI King Lok of 6M. He got four 5** and one 5*. Congratulations to King!

The school has now gained experience of the challenge and demands of the HKDSE and can apply this experience to improving student performance each year in future. The Pass Rate (Grade 2+) in each subject can be seen in the Table below.

To celebrate the ?HK Campaign during May 6-12, an International Beach Handball Competition was organized in Kwai Chung. Over 200 competitors and officials from 9 Asian countries took part. Our old boy, Ivan Leung, now a 1st year student at City U was goal-keeper for the Hong Kong Men's Team who came 5th in the competition. Congratulations to Ivan and all the Hong Kong Team.

This is the sixth year the school organizes a competition for primary schools in Hong Kong. Four different schools have entered the Final of this competition: La Salle Primary School, Kowloon Tong School (Primary Section), St. Francis of Assisi’s Caritas School and Leung Kui Kau Lutheran Primary School. Finally, La Salle Primary School won the champion this year. All primary students enjoyed the atmosphere of our school.

1W CHAN Wa Pan, Ben participated in a boys' singing group - Big Boyz Club for more than 2 years. The group is providing opportunities to enhance boys' confidence by giving them chances to perform. They compose their own music in order to let parents, teachers and the community about their feelings and wills through the lyrics. Tak Sun got the 3rd place in HKSSF Volleyball

C-Grade Volleyball Team came to the 3rd place finally in the HKSSF Volleyball Championship. They beat Lam Tai Fai College by 33:31, 17:25, 15:12 in the 3rd place knock-out. This is the first award for junior volleyball since its establishment while the last award was by A grade in 2004. Boys showed their strong team spirit to fight for the victory in every match. They learnt the importance of mutual support and how to overcome their weaknesses. Well done, boys!

5M Stanley Wong, 5M Matthew Lau and 3P Brian Lam joined the Hong Kong Team for the World Student Handball Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. This was a unique opportunity to travel overseas in representation of Hong Kong and compete against the best handball teams in the world. Mr. Jackie Chan, our P.E. teacher accompanied the Hong Kong Team as a coach. Hong Kong managed to reach the Quarter Finals and finished among the top eight teams in B-Final. B-Grade, C-Grade Sports Teams in Finals

C-Grade Volleyball Team fights for 3rd place. Volleyball is a sport that has recently re-started in the school and this year competes in the HKSSF District Competition. On Saturday 20 April Tak Sun C-Grade beat Chan Chun Ha Secondary School 20:25, 25:18, 15:6 in the quarter finals. On Sunday the team lost 0:2 to HKBUAS Wong Kam Fai Secondary School. They will play the 3rd place final on Sunday 28th April at Yuen Wo Playground against Lam Tai Fai. Many thanks to coach Mr. Bosco Lo for taking this initiative and leading the boys to sporting success.

C-Grade Football Team played in the HKSSF Final against Sha Tin College and lost 3:1 at Ma On Shan playground in spite of having scored first to lead 1:0 in the first five minutes. Congratulations to the C-Grade team for coming so far. The good performance of the C-Grade and A-Grade (Champions) means that Tak Sun is promoted to the 1st Football Division in 2013-14.

In the B-Grade Handball Semi-Final the Tak Sun Team beat CUHFAA Chan Chun Ha 14:10. The will face PLK C.W. Chu Secondary School in the Final.

From February 17-22 a group of 28 from Tak Sun including 24 students, led by Messrs. Bosco Lo, Yau Yat-hon and Ray Yeung and Dr. Herbert worked on the Thai-Border border in northern Thailand, building toilets for orphan refugees displaced by civil war. The students lived in St Theresa's school in Mae Sod the construction work was at New Blood School. There were many chances to interact with the refugees, playing soccer, teaching English and giving gifts. They also visited the Dr. Cynthia Maung Clinic for landmine victims. It was a deep learning experience for our boys and we hope to repeat the experience next year.

LOUIE Yin Lam (Form 6 graduate of the Class of 2012) received the Best Hong Kong Red Cross Youth member of the year! With his contribution to the Tak Sun Red Cross Youth Unit 304, he was selected as a role model among all Hong Kong Red Cross members. In the short history of Tak Sun Red Cross, just 5 years, we have two students received this honour. It is a remarkable achievement in Hong Kong. In addition, Yin Lam and Chau Lai Hei (Form 7 graduate of the Class of 2012) received the Honour Award also to recognize their efforts paid in Red Cross. Congratulations to them!

The popular local “Kitchee Soccer Team” visited Tak Sun SS on 22nd January. The team showcased their soccer skills to Tak Sun students joining the AWE Program, giving them a unique opportunity to play soccer with the best players in Hong Kong.

2013 University of Cambridge IGCSE and IELTS Examinations
The first group of Form 5 Tak Sun students will take the University of Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in May 2013. They will take exams in Physics, Chemistry and Biology which are very compatible with the HKDSE syllabus. They will obtain a respected international qualification and have an opportunity to practice taking a public examination.

In the same month, the first batch of Form 5 students will take the international English examination IELTS. This is a widely recognized university admission qualification and will enable our students to subject their English skills to a reliable and demanding evaluation.

Three Hong Kong Speech Festival Champions
Ian YONG, student of Class 2T was Champion in the HK English Speech Festival Solo Verse Speaking. The following comments were made by the judge: 'You captured the essence of the poem and shared it through skilled use of modulation and subtle facial expressions. Excellent work - Keep it up.' We also thank Mr. Arto Van Grondelle and Mr. Michael Wong for the untiring training they have given this student.

KAN Hoi, student of Class 4J was Champion in the HK English Speech Festival Solo Verse Speaking. The following comment was given by the adjudicator: 'Good eye range over audience. This was delivered as a real challenge by way of advice. Heat diction and the phrasing were intact - Many vocal power and emphasis.' Besides congratulating KAN Hoi, we would also express our gratitude to Mr. Tony Lau for the inspiring coaching he has given this student.

Basil WONG Ngo-Yeung Basil from Class 2P won the English Speech Festival (Solo Verse Speaking - Non-Open Secondary 2 - Boys). The following comments were made Mr. Barry Prince, the adjudicator: "This was an excellent performance of the poem. You had a very good understanding of the humour in the poem. You engaged very well with the audience. Excellent expression both vocally and facially. Excellent work. Very well done." Some of them performed very well individually, such 2T NG Ho Yin, he got the 5th runner-up. Besides, our B Grade also got the 4th runner-up. Well done, boys!

CARLSSONS SKOLA is one of the oldest and most famous schools in Stockholm. The Principal, Ms. Susanne Ridner and Ms. Doris Lindberg, Senior Mathematics teacher visited Tak Sun on 31st October. Ms. Lindberg won the National Swedish Award from Outstanding Mathematics Teacher of the Year. Ms. Ridner and Ms. Lindberg observed some Mathematics lessons and had a sharing session with teachers. EAEA movie: "There be Dragons"

The sponsoring body, East Asian Educational Association, greatly present the movie "There Be Dragons". The movie is based in the life of Saint josemaria Escrive, the founder of Opus Dei, on whose spirit we built the education philosophy of the School. "There Be Dragons" is directed by Roland Joffe, the director of the Oscar movies "Killing Fields" and "The Mission". More than 400 people came to the School Hall and enjoyed the movie.

15th Hong Kong Macau Handball Interport
Our boys CHEUNG Shun Kan Kelvin of 6M has been selected as the Hong Kong Youth Squad and participated in the 15th Hong Kong Macau Handball Interport in Macau on 9th September 2012 and Hong Kong won as a score 27:15. The China Hong Kong Team got Champion! Congratulations to Kelvin!

Last summer, 5M CHEUNG Shun Kan Kelvin, 7A LEE Wai Tung, Tony and 6M LEUNG Chun Yin, Ivan participated in 13th Asian Men Junior Handball Championship in Qatar as a member of the China Hong Kong Squad. There are a total of 14 teams such as Japan, Korea, Qatar, United Arab Emirate, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and so on. The China Hong Kong Team got 11th finally! Well done!

HK A-Level Results 80% of F7 qualify for university
The 2012 A-Level results were released on June 29th. 80% of Tak Sun Form 7 students reached the qualifying standard for university. Subject pass rates were much higher than the Hong Kong average shown in the table below.

Douglas LAM outstanding university TA in Canada

LAM Yat Hymn Douglas (F2 in 2004 – 2005), who is now studying Commerce at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, recently received the Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Award by the Department of Computer Science which was recognizing his outstanding performance in providing online tutorials and assistance. In addition, with his outstanding academic performances, he was in the Dean’s List. He is now working as a Research Assistant in the Sauder School of Business at the UBC. Slam Dunk Challenge – Basketball with Social Service

11 students have participated in this programme. They are required to complete a series of social services and participate in a basketball competition (Boys Open Group, 24 teams). In the basketball competition, they finally arrived at 6th place. For the social service, they have to share their feeling in a presentation and they got the 1st runner-up! Congratulations! It is believed that they understood their abilities more through the social service and sports activities, which were important in their personal development.

LO Kai Ho Keith (F7 Graduate of Class of 2002) led the Hong Kong ladies team to participate in the Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas 2012 Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying, which was held from 24th to 29th April at Victoria, Australia. Keith is the captain of the Hong Kong ladies tennis team and the team finally got the 5th place after beating the 1st seeding team India in their last match. Awards in the JA Company Programme

Six students of our school participated as volunteers and performed in the Graduation Ceremony of the Programme held on 21 April 2012 (Saturday). The JA company of our school, Cuisine@HK, received a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award given by the Programme because of their out-of-profit donation rendered to the Hong Kong community. In recognition of our support, in the form of partners, to the Programme, our school was awarded a 'Five-year JA Company Programme School' plaque for commemoration. Teachers' Professional Experience Sharing Month 2012

Mr. Tony Lau, our English Subject Stream Master and an Awardee of the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence 2009/2010 in the English Language Education KLA, was invited by the Education Bureau and the Quality Education Fund to run a seminar for local English teachers last Saturday in Teachers' Professional Experience Sharing Month 2012. The topic is “Sharing of strategies that can help students develop and organize their ideas in English writing”.

In this Professional Experience Sharing Month, there were only two seminars for local English teachers. More than 100 English teachers from both primary and secondary schools joined this seminar joyfully and questionnaires were administered thereafter. Exactly 92% of the participants found Tony’s sharing professionally useful and pedagogically inspiring. Tony’s teacher-friendly professional sharing is totally in line with the quest of Tak Sun – creating a real EMI school in the territory while nurturing students to be Christian gentlemen with a global outlook.

AWE School Trip to Kenya, Africa

V07 Exploring Kenya is another of our school’s successful AWE programme this year. This second group of 18 students saw even more of Kenya’s flora and fauna as well as went much deeper into the culture and society through visits to Ofafa Jericho High School in Nairobi, Kisima Secondary School at 3500 meters above sea level, settlements of such Kenyan tribes as the Massai and Samburu as well as the Kwetu Home for street boys. Students have developed a multi-faceted understanding of the lifestyles and difficulties people are facing. More importantly, most of them were able to reflect on their own lives and some even developed an interest in going back to do volunteer work. All students enjoyed the trip so much and are still talking to date about what they have seen.

AWE School Trip to Spain and Portugal

Exploring Faith and Culture in Spain and Portugal is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme brought students to the northern regions of Spain and Portugal. There was a strong cultural atmosphere providing students with a lot of great fun. Students lived in the homes of host families throughout their sojourn in Spain, having plenty of precious opportunities to interact with the students at Colegio Montecastelo, our brother school in Vigo, Spain. In addition to visits to historic places in Santiago de Compostela and Vigo (in Spain) as well as Braga and Porto (in Portugal). The whole group left Hong Kong on 25th January and will come back today. All students had a wonderful and unforgettable experience in the whole trip.

“Rome: Centre of Civilization & Faith” is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme provided students with a better understanding of Catholicism and its history and art in the world’s two famous cities: Rome and Vienna. The participants were requested to do a study on the religious art, history and architecture found in these two cities. They selected relevant churches and basilicas and other related structures and came up with a brief report on history, art and faith in Rome and Vienna. The whole group left Hong Kong on 25th January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

A group of 62 members including 56 students and 6 teachers enjoyed the 5-day trip in our AWE programme “Shanghai Development Tour”. It was enjoyable not only because the members could see how prosperous and modernized our mother country is through visiting some heavy industries and commercial firms, members also enjoy the interaction and enhancing relationship with their peers. We would like to end the passage with a phrase given by a student at the end of the trip when he gave thank to the personnel who helped in the trip, “This is only our first step to understand our mother country. We must take a lot more steps in the future to make ourselves acquaintance with her.”

AWE School Trip to Cambodia

“NICAM: Nice Cambodia Trip” is the new AWE programme in this year. This program brought our students to Phnom Penh & Siem Reap. There was highly focused on community service. Students visited Krasang Roleung Primary School in Siem Reap and Andong Community in Phnom Penh, having interaction with Cambodia children, providing house restoration service and materials (e.g. stationeries, clothes & food etc.) to those families. 24 students joined the trip from 31st January to 3rd February, 2012 and got a valuable and meaningful experience in Cambodia.

The AWE programme of “V03 Exploring Cultures in Malaysia and Singapore” has been held from 30/1/2012 to 3/2/2012. Many activities were arranged for students in order to let them understand more about the environmental protection and city planning in Singapore; the difference of the education system between Malaysia and Singapore; the multi-racial cultures in both places. For examples, NEWater plant visit in Singapore and school visits in one of international schools in Singapore and one of local schools in Malaysia. Students did experience a lot when they attended lessons with the Singaporean students and communicated with the Malaysian students during the school visits.

AWE School Trip to Vietnam

“Experiencing Vietnam” is one of the self-organized programme by our school. This programme brought 50 students to Dalat of Vietnam. In that city, we provide a 3-day voluntary service for a minority group (K’Hor), by helping them to build toilets and small houses. On the last day of our trip, we organized a farewell party for all people living there (around 200 villagers), everyone enjoys it very much. All students had a fruitful and unforgettable experience in this trip.

"Exploring Faith and Culture in Spain and Portugal" is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme brought students to the northern regions of Spain and Portugal. There was a strong cultural atmosphere providing students with a lot of great fun. Students lived in the homes of host families throughout their sojourn in Spain, having plenty of precious opportunities to interact with the students at Colegio Montecastelo, our brother school in Vigo, Spain. In addition to visits to historic places in Santiago de Compostela and Vigo (in Spain) as well as Braga and Porto (in Portugal). The whole group left Hong Kong on 25th January and will come back on 4th February. The photos are taken in Portugal. Some 17 students from Colegio Montecastelo joined us in the trip. All the students had a wonderful and unforgettable experience in the whole trip.

Shum Shui Po Cross-Country Competition

The Cross Country Team participated in the Shum Shui Po Cross-Country Competition on 8th January 2012 at Shing Mun Reservoir. They got a very encouraging result: 3W YUEN Cheuk Bun got the 6th place in the Boys Group D Section; 1T CHAN Christopher Chi Lai, 1T NG Ho Yin and 2J LAU Sze Tsun got the 6th, 8th and 10th places in the Boys Group E Section. Champions of IVE Career Training Programme

Three students, 5J WAN King Chun Alan, 5J KWAN Warren and 5M CHOW Tsz Ching Calvin have won 1st prize in the Career Training Programme organized by the HKIVE (Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education). The event was organized for Sha Tin District by the Business Administration Department of IVE (Shatin) with more than 20 schools participating. The contest was held last December (2011) during their Term 1 Examination and they attended the prize giving ceremony last Saturday (7th January 2012) morning. Their prize is consisted of HK$3,000 cash as well as a ticket for seminars worth HK$2,000. Congratulations to Alan, Warren and Calvin for all the hard work they put into their project.

The Cuisine@HK, a JA Company from Tak Sun Secondary School formed by a group of S4 and S5 students, just finished their showcase at the Kwai Tsing Theatre on 17th December. The students did have very good experiences in forming a mini-corporation and running a company in this JA Company Programme, which provided them opportunities in learning real business, teamwork, and leadership skills. Before the showcase, they cooperated with Tai Oi Secondary School and set up pre-sale booth between both schools.

Our students often do well in the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival. This year, we have got two champions, one runner-up and one 2nd runner-up in the 63rd Hong Kong Schools English Speech Festival.

Our first batch of graduates who studied the Applied Learning course, "Film and Video Studies" at the Vocational Technical College (VTC) had their graduation show on 10th December at the VTC Tseung Kwan O campus. We believed that this course did provide them hand-on experiences as well as academic knowledge for their future needs, especially in the Film Industry. We hope that they will have good results in the coming HKDSE (Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education).

Wong Tsz-sang brings renown to Hong Kong with his creative project

WONG Tsz Sang (Form 7 Graduate of Class of 2007) recently won a grand award in the tertiary student project category of The Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Awards (APICTA) for his undergraduate honours project “Ulcer Detection in Gastrointestinal Videos”. With such achievements, he has been interviewed by different media. After he graduated in the Hong Kong Baptist University, thanks to his talent, Tsz Sang is now studying in the Chinese University of Hong Kong to further pursue his studies in Computer Science. Our Grade A Handball Team got the 2nd runner-up this year. We unluckily lost to the PLK CW Chu College by one point (11:12) in the Semi-Final. Our teacher, Mr. Clement Ng, recently helped Oxfam, Hong Kong in preparing their teaching aids for teachers regarding Global citizenship. Mr. Ng made use of his Geography lessons with elements in Other Learning Experiences to let students understand more about the concept of global citizenship. LAI Clarence Ka Tsun (Form 7 Graduate of Class of 2010) won the Bronze medal in Men’s Epee (Grade C Team) in the 17th All China University Fencing Championship held in Guangzhou. Caritas Bazaar

The Fide Society and the Student Association supported the Shatin Caritas Bazaar on 20th November. About 100 student helpers and teachers worked for the booth arranged by our School. They did organize it well and demonstrated the virtue of caring. Finally, they helped the Caritas to raise more than $30,000.

Tak Sun Partnerships and Projects with HKU and CUHK
Tak Sun has renewed its “Professional Partnership School” contract with the University of Hong Kong for three more years. This will involve sending teachers from Tak Sun to monitor English teaching in other schools and allowing HKU education majors in initial training to come to Tak Sun for their Teaching Practicum.

Tak Sun has also agreed to take part in two medical research projects of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Prince of Wales Hospital. The first, under Professor Alice Pik Shan Kong will study obesity in teenagers, while the second, led by Professor Yun-Kwok Wing will look at patterns of sleep deprivation and sleep compensation in students.

International Boys' School Coalition (IBSC) Meeting

Our Principal, Dr. Herbert represented Tak Sun at the Asia Regional Conference of the IBSC at St. Paul’s College, Hong Kong on 21st October 2011. Many famous boys’ schools in the Asia/Pacific Region also attended, including La Salle College, Diocesan Boys’ School, Kowloon Wah Yan College and Hong Kong Wah Yan College. Two of the best schools in Singapore, Raffles Institution and St. Joseph’s Institution were also present. Other schools in the group include the Doon School (India) and St Mary's International School (Tokyo). The Executive Director of IBSC, Mr. Brad Adams and the Vice-President of IBAC, Dr. John Kennard of St. Paul’s College led the Conference and each member shared their experiences in teaching boys. Tak Sun Vice-Principal Mr. Ronald Hui, an old boy of St Paul's College, accompanied Dr Herbert.

Community Charity Day 2011

The Day was an educational activity that provided an opportunity for our students to learn the virtues of caring and generosity by supporting the Dress Special Day organized by the Hong Kong Community Chest and the Raffle ticket sales organized by the Hong Kong Caritas. Also, in order to enhance students' house identity, an inter-house fund-raising competition was held. Approximately $40,000 was raised by the students, teachers and staff.

Kirin Cheung, our rowing elite

CHEUNG King Lun Kirin of 5M represented China Hong Kong and participated in the Asia Cup 1 Rowing Championship 2011 held in Singapore from 2nd to 5th June 2011. Since 2008, Kirin has been selected as the Hong Kong Youth Rowing Team member. Also, he was awarded as one of the most potential athletes by the Hong Kong Sports Institute. In 2011, he was further received scholarships given by the Institute. His performance was highly appreciated by the Hong Kong China Rowing Association. Well done, Kirin!

Our C Grade Handball team got the 1st runner up in the HKSSF Shatin & Sai Kung Area Handball Competition by only losing at 9:11 to CUHKFAA Chan Chun Ha Secondary School in the Final. However, our A Grade and B Grade Handball Teams got the Champion and the 1st runner up in this area and hence, we are the best performed Handball Team in the HKSSF Shatin & Sai Kung Area this year. International Exchange with Redfield College, Australia

Three of our students, Yeung Him Felix of 4W, Kwan Warren of 4J and Leung Kai-hang, Joshua of 3P returned from their student exchange at our sister school, Redfield College, Sydney. Redfield provided homestay for our students, who were made very welcome by their Australian classmates. They were able to enhance their English speaking skills, enjoy life in an Australian family and share in their love of sports, including horse riding.

Two of our Tak Sun boys, CHEUNG Chi Wing, Tommy of 5W and CHEUNG Shun Kan Kelvin of 4M have been selected by the Handball Association of Hong Kong, China. They have represented Hong Kong Handball Junior Squad Team (Boys) participated in the Europe Aged Group Handball Tournament 2011 in Germany and Czech Republic from 20th April to 1st May. They put a lot of effort on this Tournament and spent 3 nights every week for training in the last four months. The Hong Kong Team finally arrived at 33th place out of 69 teams in Final.

The Principal, teachers and students of Forms 2 and 3 traveled to Guangzhou for an exchange with our sister school. After exchanging greetings and gifts with the school authorities there, the Tak Sun students attended the morning classes of Year 10 and 11 and were able to observe the excellent motivation, good discipline and active participation of the mainland students in classes of up to 55 students. Tak Sun won the HKSSF Table Tennis Championships

Our Grade B Table-Tennis Team got the championship this year. They defeated Jockey Club Ti-I College by 3:2 in the Final. Our Grade C Team also did a good job. They got the 1st runner-up this year by only losing 1:3 to S.K.H. Lam Kau Mow Secondary School in the Final. Our Grade A Team qualified into the knock-out stage also, but losing to Ti-I College in the first round. It is believed they have prepared themselves well for greater achievements in the future. Tak Sun: A HKU Faculty of Education Professional Partnership School

Tak Sun is one of 14 Professional Partnership Schools which work closely with HKU. Each year HKU chooses one secondary school as venue for sharing among partnership schools. This year, Tak Sun was chosen as an exemplary secondary school where students have abundant opportunities to use English outside the classroom.

Professor Stephen Andrews, the Dean of the Faculty of Education of HKU and Dr Tammy Kwan, the Assistant Dean together with 22 education professionals, including 3 secondary school principals visited Tak Sun Secondary on 13 April 2011 to witness how the English Department teachers have worked together to create an English-rich campus.

The workshop lasted from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm and visitors experienced the whole-campus Lunch Broadcast, the Language Studio activities and the Board Game Extravaganza at the Student Activity Centre. All the visitors were truly impressed by the student-friendly activities where students experience and enjoy English learning outside the classroom from Monday to Thursday every week. These activities empower our next generation to excel in a globalized world.

Hong Kong District Handball Team Training Competition 2010-2011
CHEUNG Shu Sum, Samuel of 2P represented Yiu Tsim Mong District Handball Team and got 3rd runner-up among all district teams in Hong Kong. Moreover, 7 students from Form 1 to Form 3 also represented Shatin District Handball Team and they got 6th place finally. It is a good experience for them to make a team with other handball lovers.

NG Hon Hin (Form 7 Graduate of the Class of 2010) has been included in the President’s Honour Roll in the 1st Semester 2010 – 2011. He is now studying Marketing after graduating from Tak Sun. KO Wai Man (Form 5 Graduate of the Class of 2008), HUNG Hing Long (Form 5 Graduate of the Class of 2008) and HUNG Sheung Yin (Form 5 Graduate of the Class of 2008) have been included in the Dean’s List while CHIU Sin Kok (Form 5 Graduate of the Class of 2009) and LUI Shui Fung (Form 5 Graduate of the Class of 2010) have received Outstanding Academic Performance Awards. As invited by the Education Bureau, our English Subject Stream Master, Mr. Tony Lau, a winner of the Chief Executive Teaching Excellence Award in English KLA, conducted an English demonstration lesson on 14th March 2011 to showcase his excellent teaching strategies. Apart from being video-taped by the Education Bureau for online sharing, Tony conducted an English lesson viewed by more than 30 participants from different secondary schools, a new record of attendance in Hong Kong. HKSSF Grade B Handball Championships

Our Grade B Handball Team got the 1st runner-up this year. It is obvious that the YMCA College had studied our team well. They got a big lead of 11:2 and everyone believed that we would lose undoubtedly. However, after the half time, our team played another defense tactics and we focused on defense. At the last minute, the result was 11:12 and we still got chances. Although we could not make it and lost by 11:13 finally, our team did learn a lesson, which was much important than getting the Champion. Well done, Tak Sun boys!

LAI Clarence Ka Tsun (Form 7 Graduate of the Class of 2010) has entered the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is now studying the Hotel Management after his graduation from Tak Sun. He showed his talents in fencing when he was studying at Tak Sun. Now, even though he is very busy in his study, he still performs very well in his favourite sport – fencing. Well done, Clarence!

AWE School Trip to Spain

"Exploring Faith and Culture in Spain" is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme brought students to the region of Andalusia in southern Spain. There was a strong cultural atmosphere providing students with a lot of great fun. Students lived in the homes of host families throughout their sojourn in Spain, having plenty of precious opportunities to interact with the students at Colegio Tabladilla, our brother school in Seville. In addition to visits to historic places in Seville, they also enjoyed day trips to Cordoba, Jerez, and the natural reserve park of Coto de Doñana. The whole group left Hong Kong on 22nd January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip. AWE School Trip to Kenya (Africa)

"Exploring Kenya" is one of the new AWE programmes this year. Twenty students and two teachers (Mr. Man and Mr. Van Grondelle) engaged on a ten day “adventure” through southern Kenya. It turned out to be a meaningful and enjoyable experience. We visited national parks, beach resorts, enjoyed local cuisine, and bargained in cities, towns, and “villages”. But, the single richest experience was visiting three local secondary schools. After the initial shock of walking onto campuses of people that looked and spoke in a completely different way, we played sports, had conversations, shared cultures, and finally, felt comfortable, relaxed, understanding, and the type of true respect that only comes with experience. The whole group left Hong Kong on 21st January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

“Rome: Centre of Civilization & Faith” is one of the well-received AWE programmes every year. This programme provided students with a better understanding of Catholicism and its history and art in the world’s two famous cities: Rome and Paris. The participants were requested to do a study on the religious art, history and architecture found in these two cities. They selected relevant churches and basilicas and other related structures and came up with a brief report on history, art and faith in Rome and Paris. The whole group left Hong Kong on 21st January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

"The Three Gorges: Project, Culture & Scenery" is one of the new AWE programmes this year. This programme aimed at leading our students to know the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River from different perspectives – from Liu Bei borrowing Jingzhou to the building of the Yellow Crane Tower, from the Xinhai Revolution to the provisional government, from the Three Gorges Project to the Express Rail Link – to appreciate the surrounding scenery and to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the Three Gorges Project so as to reflect on the opportunities and impacts brought about by the recent developments in China. Our students had the opportunity to contact and communicate with the students and residents there, and got to know modern China from the first person's point of view. The whole group left Hong Kong on 25th January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, known as Chang'an in ancient China, is the largest metropolis in northwestern China. Through site visits to ancient capital of Xi'an to explore the Qin, Han and Tang dynasties, exposure to the ancient civilizations of their own and neighboring communities, and an understanding of this period of ancient history and culture of the contemporary world and the continuing impact on today's Chinese people's lives, students would have a better understanding of the changes and inheritance of ancient Chinese civilization and modern culture. The whole group left Hong Kong on 24th January and joyfully arrived home today. They have had wonderful experiences throughout the whole unforgettable trip.

A group of principals from different secondary schools in Beijing visited TSSS today (12th January 2011). This trip was organized by the Little Angels Association in Beijing. Our Principal, teachers and students shared our experiences in organizing Activity Week Experience (AWE) Programme and social service programmes with our visitors. They also participated in the AWE Inauguration Ceremony and some briefing sessions of these programmes. This is a good start for our school to initiate professional sharing and exchange programmes with secondary schools in Beijing.

"Survival Tips for New English Teachers" published in HKFEW

Mr Tony Lau, our English Subject Stream Master as well as an awardee of the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence in English Language Education KLA in 2010, has been invited by the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers to write an article on survival tips for new English teachers. Tony's article, entitled "Survival Tips for New English Teachers" has just been published in the newspaper (Issue no. 23) of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers. In this thought-provoking article, Tony shares his experience and offers many good pieces of advice to new English teachers regarding how they can become reflexive and lifelong professionals in ELT. Simply put, Tony's article is not only inspiring for new English teachers, but also enlightening for ELT professionals in the territory. Tony's philosophy epitomized in his article is totally in line with the mission and vision of Tak Sun – creating a real EMI school empowering our boys to become Christian gentlemen with a global outlook in this global village. Visit of the Karanji Secondary School Wind Band, Singapore

A group of Singaporean School Band visited TSSS on 4th December. The Karanji Secondary School Wind band is composed of 82 students and six teachers, who paid a visit to TSSS from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. They did some music interflow with our boys at the School Hall. After that we had some refreshments and the students from both parties can communicate with one another. This is a good chance for our students to broaden their horizon through the international language – music.

French International School Victor U14 (C-grade) Segalen Invitational Basketball Tournament

The C-grade Basketball Team participated in the U14 Victor Segalen Invitational Basketball Tournament hosted by French International School (FIS) on 3rd and 4th December 2010, facing some of the best international schools in the territory including Hong Kong International School (HKIS) and Canadian International School (CNDIS). We beat FIS 51-1 on the first day, but lost the games to CNDIS 12-20 and to HKIS 19-28 on the second day, only one match shy to final. Our boys have learnt a lot from the matches and we will definitely get stronger. Very well done, boys!

The Principal and two teachers from the Chinese Department traveled to Guangzhou to join in the celebrations marking the 80th Anniversary of Guangzhou No. 2 Middle School. These took place in the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall in the presence of the Deputy-Mayor of Guangzhou City. This year Guangzhou No. 2 Middle School ranked 1st in Guangzhou and 7th in China. The Fide Society and the Student Association supported the Shatin Caritas Bazaar on 21st November. More than 80 student helpers worked for the booth arranged by our School. They did organize it well and demonstrated the virtue of caring. Finally, they helped the Caritas to raise more than $30,000.

A Worthy Champion in the Speech Festival 2010

Yong Vi Jun Sean of 2T won the Championship in Solo Verse Speaking – Non-Open Secondary 2 – Boys in the Speech Festival. He got 89 out of 100 marks. The Adjudicator, Mrs. Marie Dixon, gave him the good comments as follows: "Excellent Strength & Variety in tone/Expressions you have such good use of Inflections/Pauses, Expressions. Well done. A performance." Being raised in an English-speaking family and educated at Tak Sun, a school with a rich English environment, Sean has always been a high achiever in English. In spite of that, he has not got complacent about his English abilities. Under the meticulous and patient guidance of his dedicated English teachers, Sean kept having serious and constant practice before the Speech Festival until he got totally absorbed in the verses. As a result, his performance was able to stand head and shoulders above the other contestants.

Exchange students from Redfield College, Australia

Three boys from our brother school, Redfield College in Australia will come to Hong Kong and stay in our School from 2nd November to 25th November. They are from Grade 9 and will be allocated to our Form 3 classes. Three families of our parents will be their host families taking care of them during their stay in Hong Kong. Our graduate, LEE Yu Sum (Form 7 Graduate of the Class of 2008), was awarded Best Student in Chinese for Professional Purposes in CIE Association Degree Programme of Hong Kong Baptist University in July 2010. Hence, he was given a scholarship. He is presently an undergraduate studying Philosophy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Another graduate, LI Yat Tung (Form 7 Graduate of the Class of 2005), has entered the President’s Honour Roll and Dean’s List in the last academic year of his studies in the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Science programme.

Mr. Neil Pickering, the Chairman of the Netherhall Educational Association (NEA) in the UK, visited our School on 19th October 2010. NEA is our sister organization in the UK and sponsors two schools in London and halls of residence at the universities of London, Manchester, Glasgow and Oxford. The Hong Kong Schools Handball Squad got the first runner-up in the Asian Schools Handball Champion 2010 in Macau. Hong Kong defeated Thailand, India and Macau, Iran got the Championship. This is the first time Hong Kong has got the first runner-up in Asia! Our student, LEE Wai Tong, Tony of 6A, scored 9 goals in the match against Iran. Congratulations to Tony and Hong Kong!

The School witnessed very encouraging results in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination 2010. Apart from having very high passing percentage in English, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics, the School admitted 63 old boys back to the F6 classes.

Our C Grade Handball Team got the Champion in the HKSSF Handball (Shatin & Sai Kung Area) at a score 14:10 in the Final match to Chinese YMCA College. CHEUNG Chi Wing, Tommy of 4W, WONG Jason Yip Lun of 4J and CHEUNG Shun Kan Kelvin of 3P represented Hong Kong and went to Singapore to participate in the 1st Singapore Teenagers Handball Invitation Tournament (??????????????) out of 16 players (aged under 16) from 24th to 28th January. This is the first time for our School to enter the All Hong Kong Schools Jing Ying Handball Tournament. It is a great opportunity for our boys to learn from other schools. We entered the quarter-final at the end with a score at 12:13 loss to Ning Po No.2 College, only one step to get a trophy. However, it is a valuable experience for us to learn. Well done, boys!

The Fluor-Man, a JA Company from Tak Sun Secondary School formed by a group of S4 and S6 students, received a merit award on the Best Product / Service Category in the “Company Programme Trade Fair” held on 19th December 2009. The JA Company Programme has been and continues to be the most popular Junior Achievement program, instilling in young people all over the world real business, teamwork, and leadership skills. Under the guidance of volunteer business advisers, students form a mini-corporation and operate a company as much as they would in the real world in about 18 weeks.

It is an annual event coordinated by the Student Association. The Party this year was held on 18th December 2009. It consisted of three parts, namely, a drama show celebrating Christmas, a Christmas variety show and an individual class Christmas celebration. Joint School Staff Development Day

The International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) has organized its first Regional Conference in Hong Kong. As a member school of the IBSC, we coordinate with Diocesan Boys’ School and St. Paul’s College in organizing workshops for their staff members in the theme of “Teaching Boys”. A famous educational consultant, Dr. Abigail Norfleet James was invited from the United States, to conduct those workshops. With her expertise is developmental and educational psychology as applied to the gendered classroom, every teacher got more insight in organizing a better class for the boys.

ZESPRI Outstanding Junior Athlete Awards

LO Chun Ming, Alex of 4T got the Outstanding Junior Athlete Award for the Second Quarter, 2009. The award presentation was held on 15th September to recognize the achievement of outstanding local junior athletes under the age of 19. There are only 5 recipients among all Hong Kong athletes and Alex is one of them. He first represented Hong Kong in 2008 at the 2nd World Junior Wushu Championships and his remarkable performance in men's 24 forms taijiquan event (Group B) earned him a gold medal. Well Done! Taiwan Tien Jian Cup Handball Tournament

WONG Jason Yip Lun of 4J, CHEUNG Chi Wing, Tommy of 4W and TANG Pak Hong, Nick of 5A have represented Hong Kong and gone to Taiwan to join the Taiwan National Tie Zhen Cup Handball Tournament (????????2009) out of 12 players (aged under 16) in Hong Kong in August. It is an International Handball Tournament including teams from Korea, Macau and Taiwan. The competition standard is extremely high.

Lee Wai Tung, Tony of 5A has been a member of the Hong Kong Junior Squad for four years. He represented Hong Kong (aged under 18) in this summer and went to Shanghai participating in the National Handball Tournament for Secondary Schools in China. They won some of the big teams in China such as Beijing, Shanghai and Macau and became Champion in China.

The Opening Ceremony and the Plantation Day of the 4th Ma On Shan Azalea Festival, sponsored by the Shatin District Council, was held on 1st March at our school. Our principal, Dr. Edward Woo was invited as a guest of honour in the Opening Ceremony. Our students participated in the plantation of azalea along the Ning Tai Road so that azalea can be seen everywhere and has become a landmark of the Ma On Shan district.

Lee Wai Tung, Tony of 5A (the tallest students of the top row), as a Hong Kong Handball Team Junior Squad member, obtained the A. S. Watson Group Hong Kong Student Sports Award. He participated in the Prize Presentation Ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Apart from receiving a certificate and a scholarship, he will have a chance to participate in the Beijing Sports Exchange Programme in the Summer.

Outstanding performance done by AU Lut Chi

Our graduate, AU Lut Chi (F7 Graduate of Class of 2007) participated with his classmates in the City University of Hong Kong in the 6th Annual Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition by winning the Honourable Mention for the Claimant’s Memorandum. “Our team competed against other teams from around the world and this helped to boost my understanding of the civil and common law systems and various debating techniques,” said Au Lut-chi, who was taking part in his first competition. He also thanked his team members for polishing his knowledge of complicated international law concepts. Congratulations to AU Lut Chi!

They felt disappointed and regretful but they still had a chance to get the championship before the end of all the matches. This is the rule of this game! The 7th Akita Cup Beach Handball Open (C Grade)

This was the first time our boys had played handball on sand. They went to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to play handball. Maybe this was the first time they had entered and had competition in a university. This was a special experience for them to experience university life. They enjoyed sun-bathing while playing Beach Handball, but it was hard to run on the hot sand. Moreover, they should learn how to adapt to the new rules of Beach Handball but they tried hard to play. They got the Second Runner-up and the 5th place finally.

The Aviation Week was held from 21 April to 25 April 2008. The objective was to empower our students to have more explorations in science and career prospects in the local and international aspects of the aviation industry. During the last two days, a mini airplane was displayed on school campus. Many students, who had a touchable hands-on experience to be a pilot sitting inside the cockpit, really fell in love with experiential learning!

Lau Sing Lai of 3J, one of our Photography Team members, won the Merit Award of Conservation and Revitalisation of Historic Buildings Photo Competition among more than 1,000 entries. This photograph was shot in front of the former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower. The new buildings in the photograph symbolize the new 21st century. In this photograph, there is a boy taking pictures and it means that everybody will still pay attention to the Clock Tower in the years to come while the stars suggest that the Clock Tower will continue to shine and attract visitors in the future.

Orientation Day of Exceptionally Gifted Students

Six students have been selected by the EDB in the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Student Enhancement Programme, including LUI Tsz Ching, Jason of 4D (Mathematics), LUK Ka Him, Peter of 6A (Science), YAU Ho Yin, Ringo of 6B (Computer Science), SHAM Long Yin, Jacky of 4B (Social Science), WONG Ki Sum Samson of 6A (Social Science) and MOK Yi Yun, Jonathan of 6B (Leadership). They will participate in a series of programmes provided by different tertiary institutions and non-government organizations to enhance their talents in their specialized areas.

Ma On Shan Cup 8K Distance Run Competition 2008

Under the freezing temperature (10C), two sub-groups of our cross-country team won the 2nd and the 3rd places among more than 30 teams in Hong Kong. This event was one of the official activities to celebrate the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Our athletic team performed very well in the Championships on three days – 22nd, 24th and 29th January. Both B and C Grade athletic teams ranked the 6th place (Merit) while Grade A ranked the 8th place (Merit) among more than 2000 competitors from 50 school teams in Shatin and Sai Kung Area.

Diabetes Hongkong Healthy Run 2008

The Diabetes Hong Kong held this event in Tai Po Tolo Harbour. The aim of this Health Run was to raise the awareness of Hong Kong people on the diabetes and the importance of regular exercise. Six representatives from our school cross-country team completed the race and received certificates.

The award is to recognize his outstanding contribution to the community through Red Cross service in the last academic year. Joint School Christmas Ball

The Ball entitled “Night of Mystery” was organized at our school. This was an event jointly organized by the Student Associations of Sha Tin Methodist College, Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School, Christian Alliance Cheng Wing Gee College and S.K.H. Lam Kau Mow Secondary School and our school. Apart from celebrating the true meaning of Christmas, students were able to upgrade their interpersonal skills.

In the Speech Festival, LEUNG Edwin Yung Hong of 6A got the championship in the category of Solo Verse Speaking - Non-Open Secondary 6-7 Boys with 96 marks – a very remarkable achievement! The adjudicator, Mr. Paul Trigg, was totally impressed by Edwin's performance and praised him for his “Excellent performance. Perfect diction.” It definitely indicates Tak Sun boys really learn joyfully in a holistic English-speaking environment on and off campus.

With a wonderful team spirit, our school Cross-country Teams received 3 trophies in all 3 Grades: 2nd runner-up in A Grade, 3rd runner-up in B Grade and 2nd runner-up in C Grade. Besides, CHAN Chun Hung, Stanley of 6A and TSANG Ka Nan, Nathan of 5B got 6th and 7th places respectively in A Grade; PUN Yiu Chung, Jonathan of 3P got 9th place in B Grade and CHAN Ching Him, Carter of 1T got 5th place in C Grade.
