Dedication of the School Chapel Altar by Cardinal Stephen Chow

As one of the milestones of the 25 th Anniversary celebration of the school, we were honoured to receive Most Rev. Cardinal Stephen Chow, the bishop of Hong Kong, to celebrate the Holy Mass and to dedicate the new altar of our school chapel. All the Catholic students of the school participated in the liturgy, and several students also served as altar servers, cantors and lectors.

In the homily, the Cardinal especially reminded the congregation about the meaning of the dedication of a new altar, connecting his message to “Pilgrims of Hope”, the theme of this Jubilee Year 2025. The dedication is also a message of hope, because the altar is where we place our Christian lives, united to the sacrifice of Christ in the Eucharist, so that our lives may become a loving response to the Love of God. The fragrance of the chrism oil and the incense on the altar are signs of the sanctifying power of God who has chosen us so that we will spread the fragrance of Christ with our lives to the whole world by becoming an acceptable offering to God. This begins – he reminded us – with our ordinary duties of each day.

In the rite of dedication of the new altar, our students also took the lead to sing the litany of the saints, asking the saints to support our prayers so that our hearts may be faithful temples of the Holy Spirit.

With the presence of three chaplains of the school, Fr. Paul, Fr. Ronald and Fr. Billy, we were pleased to have several priests joining us at the celebration and stayed with us after Mass to enjoy a short get-together with the Cardinal. The guest priests include Rev. Xavier Wong, the Chairperson of the Diocesan Liturgy Commission, our priest friends from the neighbouring St. Francis Parish in Ma On Shan, Rev. Jomon Varghese P.I.M.E. and Rev. Joachim Pham Thanh Diep, as well as Rev. Tito Lopez Martin, M.G., the Chair of the Diocesan Youth Commission.

Together with the new altar, the newly renovated chapel also features a new tabernacle and two new oil paintings on canvas of the Holy Family and of St. Josemaria with our students, which serve to provide a more prayerful and dignified setting for the celebration of the Eucharist and for personal prayer and devotions.

25th Anniversary
Athletic Meet

As Principal Law finished delivering his inspiring inauguration address, setting the tone of sportsmanship and team spirit for this two-day event, followed by our morning prayer, our 25th anniversary athletic meet embarked. Mr. Gavin YANG, a young fencing athlete from 5W, took the oath at the opening ceremony, he committed, on behalf of all the other student athletes to respect and uphold sportsmanship, respect the rules and take part the competitions in the spirit of a fair play.

Throughout the events, English, Cantonese and Mandarin announcements kept our athletes informed about the scheduled events and their report locations. The credit goes to our student announcers. A team of talented students provided vigorous live commentary in some of the events, adding energy and excitement to the proceedings.

The competition was fierce. CHONG Ka Yin from 1M Piccard emerged as the overall individual champion. Piccard House also claimed victory as the overall champion after two days of packed-action events.

One of the most memorable moments came during the relay, when the baton was passed from Mr. Ben Wong, Mr. Felix Yau, Mr. Jason Ip … all the way to the 18th alumnus teacher, Mr. Joe Tang, everyone on the spectator stand was cheering enthusiastically. In the words of Principal Law in his closing speech, “…this symbolizes the unity, brotherhood and enduring legacy of our Tak Sun team spirit.”

Tak Sun Zhong Shan City
Fencing Champions

Tak Sun students (1W王俊龍) Wong Chun Long and (3J蔡卓希) Cai Zhuo Xi participated in the Zhong Shan City U14 fencing competition. According to the China National Fencing Association, this is ranked as a D-level competition.

Both students competed in the épée (重劍)event. In fencing, épée uses the heaviest sword and épée is the only event in which the target is the opponent’s whole body. Therefore, it requires special concentration, accuracy, and speed. As his whole body is a target, the successful épée fencer must anticipate the moves of his opponent and make sure to hit at the correct time.

The result was that Wong Chun Long was ranked Champion and Cai Zhuo Xi came 2 nd Runner-up. Congratulations to them both. This year, they have practiced and competed in many competitions where they have both excelled.

Exceptional English Speaking Talent
at HKBU Competition

The College of International Education (CIE), Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) recently hosted its seventh annual English Public
Speaking Contest on 24 May 2024, showcasing the talent and eloquence of participants from Hong Kong local secondary schools.

The Grand Final of the contest featured a diverse group of 12 speakers, selected from a pool of 162 participants representing 65 secondary
schools, as they competed for six awards: Champion, 1st Runner-Up, 2nd Runner-Up, two Merits, and an Audience Award for Best Speaker.
After delivering powerful and engaging performances, Ms. Sutradhar Tapasa from Ho Lap College (sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen), emerged as
the deserving recipient of the coveted Champion Award.

The aim of the CIE English Public Speaking Contest is to enhance students’ public speaking techniques and proficiency in English
communication.

The Grand Final panel of judges included:

- Dr. Benjamin Moorhouse, Assistant Professor Department of Education Studies HKBU

- Ms. Allison Leger, Lecturer of Complementary Studies Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts

- Dr. Theresa Cunanan, Associate Programme Director, Division & Arts and Languages, HKBU CIE.

Finalists were tasked with delivering a 3-minute speech on the topic of “Vision”, followed by a 2-minute impromptu speech in response to a
random question. Contestants covered a wide range of topics in their speeches, such as dreams, personal growth, and societal issues. They
also exhibited strong impromptu speaking skills, revealing their agility of thought, spontaneity, and genuine feelings.

While complimenting the excellent performances of the contestants, Dr. Moorhouse highlighted the value of public speaking for the students in
the long run, as he considers it an essential skill that they need to acquire for their future developments.

Ms. Leger enlightened the audience with three helpful tips that will bring an individual’s public speaking to another level, which include: telling
stories or examples, being natural, and giving vivid descriptions. Dr. Theresa Cunanan reminded the audience the three Ps’ of public speaking:
Pitch, Pacing, and Pauses. In the age of AI, she believes it is more important than ever that we uphold the human touch when presenters speak
publicly. The non-verbal communication skills, the ability to compose oneself on stage, and the power to make silence speaks to take the
moment are the vital tools.

The Champion, Ms. Sutradhar Tapasa, acknowledged the challenging nature of the competition but appreciated the opportunity to engage with
fellow contestants.

TThe first runner-up and winner of the Audience Award for Best Speaker, Ms. Leung Sum Ying, emphasized the importance of preparation,
including listening to Ted Talks for inspiration and building confidence by visualising herself presenting to an audience.

Ms. Tapasa and Ms. Leung both expressed their gratitude to their school and families for their unwavering support. Last but not least, they
shared valuable advice for aspiring participants, which is to embrace the journey of speech and seek to learn from each experience, and
consider the perspective of the audience by using imagination.

Learn to Unite!

Tak Sun participated in the elite competition for the first time last school year and reached the final 8. This school year the team successfully "continued history" and reached the top 8 of the elite competition again. Captain Au Siu-fung (Anderson) looks forward to the team showing off its skills in the Panasonic Basketball Game again:

"This event is staged in Southorn Playground (Wanchai), and the attention is higher than the Classic. Every Hong Kong basketball player will want to play in Southorn. The atmosphere here makes. We are more committed and focused, and our goal is to play every game well and be worthy of ourselves!”

Coached by A-1 Grand Slam stars Choi-Sir (蔡再懃) and Wu-Sir (吳松峻) Tak Sun has become a regular in the competition in recent years. This year, it was invited to participate in the Panasonic Basketball Game. Captain Anderson Au said the team's mentality has greatly improved under the leadership of the two coaches:

"I used to feel the strongest star only needs to step forward, no other teammates are needed. Now I understand that basketball is a team sport and everyone must be united to play well.

Wu Sir pays great attention to discipline. No matter how good his skills are, he cannot fall behind if he has a bad attitude. As the captain, you have even greater responsibilities and you must have the attitude that a basketball player should have.”

The Tak Sun team members wrote "Learn to Unite" in the goal column of the field book. Anderson said, “We at Tak Sun will rise and fall together. If something happens, we will work together. If we achieve something, we will enjoy it together!"

Tak Sun
New Basketball Power

Oriental Daily has published an article in new schools that are rising up to challenge the traditional leaders in inter-school. Team player, Victor Tse
explains how this has come about:

Team,

We post the following player reflection: 今日大家都做得好好,唔理係場上定場下都好,
場上嘅就落盡力打比賽,場下嘅就落盡力打氣,士氣同實力兼優,但係我哋嘅體能同
防守仍然需要努力,減少自身嘅犯規,同埋turn over嘅話要即刻返去防守、停波,
唔好淨係用犯規嚟Stop人哋嘅進攻。進攻方面,都係要夾多啲,培養多啲默契同埋

A-Grade Basketball HKSSF 1st Runner-up – through to菁英competition

2/12/2022

Chan Kai, who were 1st runner-up in the previous round of the competition before the Covid-19 pandemic, took the lead in this final and were already far ahead in the early stages. However, Tak Sun was led by Anderson Au and Tony Rui in the fightback, and by the early part of the second quarter Tak Sun had already caught up to just two points behind. However, Chan Kai then scored more points. In the second quarter, five players scored, and the distance between the teams increased 26:19 by half-time.

Tak Sun’s defense strengthened in the 2nd half sides, and Anderson Au continued to lead the attack. He pushed Chan Kai until Tak Sun were only one point behind, but by the end of the 3rd quarter Tak Sun were four points behind.

Chen Kai's captain So Ka Wai stepped forward and scored five points in a row from a 90 degree angle. Although Tak Sun also answered with 3-pointers from Anderson Au, Chan Kai's Law Ji-leung managed to stabilize the team's position again. Then Chau Yiu-yung scored a key 3-pointer, and Chan Kai finally defeated Tak Sun 49:42 to win the championship for the first time

The 1st Hong Kong-made LEGO Ideas Winner

Our graduate student, Truman Cheng (2012) also known as “legotruman” has won 1st prize for his design based on the painting “The Starry Night” by the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. The set is a tribute which Truman wanted to pay to Vincent Van Gogh and his most famous painting “The Starry Night” painted in 1889. The competition judges said that Truman uses LEGO to show a new sense of art and is fully deserving of the award.

Truman explains that the set re-imagines the original painting in a 3D scene, with strong emphasis on the artist’s iconic brush strokes and color choice. Various techniques are used to reproduce van Gogh’s beautiful brush work. Clips and brackets form the swirling cloud; plates stack to form the hillsides and bushes; curved parts build up to become the cypress tree. His favorite part is the inclined plate stack on the right, capturing the angled brush strokes within the moon-lit cloud.
