17-Jun-2022 The 1st Hong Kong-made LEGO Ideas Winner |
|
![]() < more... > |
Our graduate student, Truman Cheng (2012) also known as “legotruman” has won 1st prize for his design based on the painting “The Starry Night” by the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. The set is a tribute which Truman wanted to pay to Vincent Van Gogh and his most famous painting “The Starry Night” painted in 1889. The competition judges said that Truman uses LEGO to show a new sense of art and is fully deserving of the award.
Truman explains that the set re-imagines the original painting in a 3D scene, with strong emphasis on the artist’s iconic brush strokes and color choice. Various techniques are used to reproduce van Gogh’s beautiful brush work. Clips and brackets form the swirling cloud; plates stack to form the hillsides and bushes; curved parts build up to become the cypress tree. His favorite part is the inclined plate stack on the right, capturing the angled brush strokes within the moon-lit cloud. |
