F4 Service Learning Program 2023-24
中四社會服務學習計劃 2023-24 |
|
All of our F4 students took part in a service learning program in January and February. The program was co-organized by the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA).
One of the goals of the program was to cultivate students’ positive values such as empathy and care for others.
In addition, the program was intended to train students’ skills in communication, cooperation, and activity planning. They need to go through different stages of services, including choosing a suitable service target, drafting and revising their service plans, and implementing the plans.
Through the different stages, they were able to learn to communicate and cooperate with others.
These are valuable learning experiences because the skills are difficult to learn in daily formal lessons.

Father's Get-together |
|
On the 9th of March 2024, our Fathers' Get-together brought together around
30 concerned fathers to address the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
on the education of their sons. Principal Law and Mr. Eric Tang, our IT
Department Head, provided valuable insights and updates on the challenges
that AI poses to the educational landscape.
During the gathering, participating fathers actively voiced their opinions,
underscoring the importance of empowering the next generation with ethical
values, guidance, and positive role models. As fathers, they acknowledged
their vital role in guiding and nurturing the youth, equipping them to
navigate the complexities of a world with conflicting values and moral
relativism.
Over coffee and snacks, the Fathers' Get-together fostered an environment
of support and camaraderie. In the wake of this gathering, we have
conducted a survey which shows that all participating fathers find the
event satisfactory or very satisfactory. We sincerely hope that this event
will continue to serve as a platform for fathers to come together, share
their experiences, and contribute to the holistic development of our
children.

|
On 4th November, 2023 Saturday afternoon, our school hosted a gathering for
fathers called the Father's Get-together. The theme of the event was
"Protecting Your Children from Digital Destruction: Empowering Fathers,"
and it aimed to bring fathers together to share their experiences,
challenges in confronting with the digital age’s challenges, and ways to
cultivate sincere and life-long friendship.

organizing healthy activities with them and limiting screen time. After the
video, Principal Law shared his insights and offered several valuable tips
for a heart-to-heart talk with our sons.
We believe that gatherings like the Father's Get-together are essential to
fostering a sense of community and getting ourselves and our sons equipped

Learning English through Drama |
|
Tak Sun Secondary School has always been looking for ways to unleash the potential of our students, especially when it comes to learning English. With the support of the EDB NET Support scheme, we were able to organize the S3 Inter-Class Drama Competition in 2023. Instead of merely drilling students with grammar and reading practices, drama offers our boys a kinaesthetic way of learning practical English usages. By engaging the whole body and mind, students learn about not only the basic elements of drama, but also the textual features of a script, the creativity of juxtaposing sound effects with dialogue and the integration of technology with the performance.

Year End Awards Presentation |
|
On 12th July, we held our year-end award presentation ceremony to celebrate
the achievements of our students. It was a thrilling event attended by all
teachers and students from Secondary 1 to 5.
The ceremony recognized talents and efforts in various inter-school and
intra-school competitions plus academic achievements over the past year. As
usual, prizes were given out for excellence in sports like fencing,
handball, as well as cultural events like the speech festival. Of course,
outstanding academic results were also rewarded.
In addition, our school also presented the most outstanding service awards
to those students with remarkable service records and a big heart.
We must highlight our overall champion basketball, handball and table tennis
teams. Their hard-earned victories against tough competitions won our school
the top trophies in HKSSF Shatin-Sai Kung District. Thunderous applause and
cheers filled the hall as the teams went on stage. Their incredible team
spirit, perseverance through trainings, and commitment to the sport were
truly admirable. Credits also go to their coaches and PE teachers.
At the end of the event, our Principal, Mr Dennis Law, congratulated all
winners and participants. He reminded that success took hard work,
resilience, discipline and collaboration. He emphasized that a
self-disciplined lifestyle was particularly salient in the upcoming summer

Afterwards, Father Paul, our school chaplain, gave all of us a blessing to

The Feast Day of Our Lady of the Church |
|
With roses, prayers and hymns, we offer to Our Lady our deepest affection
and devotion, especially in this Marian month of May. We have expressed our
profound trust in Our Lady as well as our immense gratitude for her
maternal care and protection of us and our families. As our Lord Jesus
Christ has entrusted us to her as our Mother, we gaze upon Our Lady with
loving devotion.
This morning, right before our Class Tutor Period, we gather on the Ground
Floor, outside the lift lobby as we do every year with FIDES boys and our
school’s Chaplaincy members. Teachers and students’ parents have prepared
and offered roses of different sizes and colours to honour Our Lady. Her
humility, her purity, her prudence, her obedience, her patience, her
faithfulness, her devotion...and all her virtues continue to shape our
character.

English Language Studio and Drama Lessons |
|
In order to build up an English-speaking campus, our students and English
teachers enjoy English speaking time in our school's Language Studio.
During lessons, we use English drama games and drama projects to enliven
our learning time when students speak up and act out. This is a result from
our English teachers’ collaboration with the NET Support Team from the
Education Bureau.
During lunch time, our students are still lingering in our Language Studio
to chit chat with their peers and English teachers. They also participate
in board games and card games like Chess, Uno and Monopoly Deal. With this
relaxed setting, students enjoy spontaneous social interactions. In

Summer Serenade unites people and communities with music |
|
Summer Serenade, our school’s annual concert, has brought together not only
students, and their parents, but also musicians of different schools to
celebrate music and talents in the auditorium of Tak Sun Secondary School.
With the pandemic receding, our school has resumed organizing this musical
event this year.
The annual concert was held in the evening of 12th May. It showcased an
impressive variety of musical pieces and performers, ranging from choir
singers to wind band and string ensemble. The event commenced with a
captivating performance by a Violin and Guitar Duet, followed by our School
Boys Choir, our School Treble Choir, and our School Wind Band. The cArts
Wind Orchestra also delivered a stunning performance, featuring “Animation
Songs Medley,” “Cinema Paradiso,” and “How Does a Moment Last Forever.” As
the night progresses, the energy builds, and the crowd becomes more and more
engaged.
During the intermission, we enjoyed a video refreshment with a String
Quartet playing “Beauty and the Beast.” performed by our school’s musician
students. Then, the Joint School Senior Mixed-voice Choir, SALEM Immanuel
Lutheran College and a Double Bass Solo by Mr. Lo Ka Hei Joshua celebrated
with music and passion in various pieces.
One of the most noteworthy features is that Mr. Bosco CHU, our music
department’s panel head, composed "Laudate Exultate"( Praise and Rejoice)
and dedicated it to the 20th anniversary of Tak Sun Secondary School. Its
four-part mixed version was performed for the joint-school choir in the
concert, leading the entire audience to praise the Lord with all creatures
of heavens and earth.
Our School Boys Choir continued with “Blue Tail Fly,” “Farewell,” and “Roll
Mighty River,” followed by Our Lady’s College Choir with “Coming Home.” The
Mass Choir concluded the concert with a beautiful rendition of “Memories.”
At this moment, the whole concert is brought to the climax that transcends
boundaries, bringing everyone together in a shared experience of joy and
unity.
Summer Serenade is a reminder of the power of music to bring people together
and lift their spirits. The fantastic atmosphere of our school's annual
concert is an experience that is to be anticipated again next summer.

International Boys Education |
|
The Hong Kong members of the International Boys School Coalition met yesterday at St Paul’s College with Mr. Tom Batty from UK, Executive Director of IBSC.
The meeting was hosted by Mr. Dennis Yuen, the Principal.
The IBSC groups together some of the best boys schools in the world from USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand but also from Africa and South East Asia.
Apart from St Paul’s College and Tak Sun, other schools present were DBS, Ying Wa College, Hong Kong Wah Yan, Kowloon Wah Yan, St Joseph’s College and
La Salle College.
Mr. Batty spoke about the characteristic of boys’ learning and education, being different from girls. Boys need more time to learn and mature. They need a diverse and
varied school experience so they can find something in which they can excel: study, sports, music and arts, etc. Once they have achieved this, they can begin to excel in
other areas. By being good at something, they can feel not only competent but also valued and begin to contribute to the community. This philosophy matches the
educational approach of Tak Sun well.
Mr. Batty explained that boys sometimes behave in a stupid way but when they do, they need to come up against “soft hands” of the teachers. The soft hands do not hurt
the boys but they are firm and do not move. The message is “You have made a mistake which will not hurt you but the school authority is firm and is not going to change.”
He encouraged schools to attend the 2023 IBSC conference in Auckland, New Zealand at Westlake Boys High School and the 2024 conference at Harrow School, London.
The Hong Kong members of the IBSC look forward to inviting other local boys schools to join their association and hope to have a regional conference looking at the
challenges facing Hong Kong boys in education.

Hung Catholic Secondary School, Hong Kong Wah Yan, Kowloon Wah Yan, Tak Oi
and St. Clare’s) in organizing this event.
The camp lasted three days in and took place in Wah Yan College (Kowloon)
and Good Hope School. It was a great honour to have the Catholic Bishop of
Hong Kong, Bishop Stephen Chow come to celebrate Holy Mass on the last day.
The theme of the leadership camp was HOY (Hope and Joy). Hoy is a Spanish
word which means ‘Today’ and the camp brought the message of hope and joy
in the Catholic faith to the student representatives of the seven schools.
Seven catholic leaders from Tak Sun joined this leadership camp, two of
them came from the 2021 leadership camp as helpers.
Through varies activities: team-building challenges, workshops, group
discussion, exchange of school experiences, self-reflection, Taizé prayer
and Holy Mass each day, the participants benefitted plentifully. Many
participants commented that they had reflected more on their relationship
with God and become more confident carrying out evangelization activities
at school. The bonding of friendship among the co-organizing schools will
be a great asset to the student representatives in their future journey as
Catholic leaders.
In the Holy Mass Bishop Stephen Chow, celebrating and reflecting on the
Feast of the Transfiguration, gave the students words of encouragement and
blessing.
Just as the Apostles were prepared by the glorious Transfiguration of
Christ, all of us are also strengthened by the presence of Christ in this
leadership camp, so that when difficulties and challenges come we will
always remain faithfully united to Christ and never lose hope.
